What homeowners actually paid

We checked this calculator against 60 fence installation quotes and invoices that homeowners shared publicly from 2021 to 2026, in 18 states. Older prices were adjusted to 2026 with official construction cost indexes. Their median was $9,700 for fences of about 180 ft, mostly wood and vinyl, and 77% of them fell between our Low and High estimates for the same length, material and state.

Published cost guides we checked put a similar job at about $6,000 (median of 3 guides from 2026), 10% below our typical price. Guides are estimates too, often older or for a smaller scope of work; we follow the quotes homeowners actually shared, and 77% of them fell within our range.

What affects the cost

Common questions

How much does it cost to fence a backyard?

In the quotes we collected, the middle fence was 180 ft long. For 150 to 200 ft with one gate, a 6 ft wood privacy fence typically costs $6,650 to $8,590, and vinyl $11,120 to $14,530, national average.

Wood or vinyl: which costs less?

Wood costs less to install. A 150 ft privacy fence typically costs $6,650 in wood and $11,120 in vinyl. Vinyl needs less upkeep, while wood needs staining or sealing every few years.

How much does it cost to remove an old fence?

Tearing out an old fence adds about $1,120 to a 150 ft wood fence job in our estimates, about $7 per foot. Ask whether hauling away the old fence is included.

Do I need a permit to build a fence?

Often. Many cities and homeowners associations require a permit or approval, especially for tall fences and front-yard fences. Our estimate includes a typical permit fee of $75. Check your city and HOA rules before you build.

Do I need to call 811 before installing a fence?

Yes. Call 811 or file a request online a few days before anyone digs post holes. Utility companies then mark buried lines for free.

How we calculated this

Fencing, post, concrete and gate prices from manufacturers and national retailers (checked October 2026), installation hours per foot from installer sources times local fence erector wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), contractor margins from industry financial data, and regional price levels from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. We check the result against verified homeowner quotes. Full methodology · Sources.

Estimates, not quotes. Actual prices depend on your contractor, yard and project details.
