What homeowners actually paid
We checked this calculator against 82 kitchen remodel quotes and invoices that homeowners shared publicly from 2019 to 2026, in 11 states. Older prices were adjusted to 2026 with official construction cost indexes. Their median was $68,000 for a mix of sizes and finishes, and 74% of them fell between our Low and High estimates for the same scope and state.
Published cost guides we checked put a similar job at about $30,500 (median of 4 guides from 2025-2026), 50% below our typical price. Guides are estimates too, often older or for a smaller scope of work; we follow the quotes homeowners actually shared, and 74% of them fell within our range.
What affects the cost
- Cabinets: the biggest line. Installed, stock cabinets add about $470 per linear foot, semi-custom about $880 and custom about $1,550, including contractor markup.
- Countertops: material and square footage; laminate costs a fraction of quartz or granite.
- Appliances: keeping working appliances saves about $11,320 on a mid-range kitchen.
- Layout changes: moving the sink, range or walls adds plumbing, gas, electrical and permit work.
- Your state: labor is about 20% of the typical price, so local wages matter.
Common questions
Can I remodel my kitchen for $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000?
Not for a full remodel by a contractor. Even a small 100 sq ft kitchen with stock cabinets, laminate countertops and basic appliances typically costs $35,310 (most quotes $19,570 to $62,890). Smaller budgets can cover a partial update, such as painted cabinets, new countertops, hardware and lighting.
What is a realistic budget for a kitchen remodel?
For a 150 sq ft kitchen, typical prices range from $40,660 with budget choices to $61,430 mid-range and $98,170 high-end. Use the calculator above for your size and state, and keep 10% to 20% for surprises found during demolition.
How much do kitchen cabinets cost?
Including installation and contractor markup, stock cabinets add about $470 per linear foot, semi-custom $880 and custom $1,550. A 150 sq ft kitchen has about 25 linear feet of cabinets.
Should I keep my existing appliances?
If they work and fit the new layout, keeping them saves about $11,320 on a mid-range remodel. Choose "Keep existing" in the calculator to see your price without new appliances.
How much should I pay upfront?
Pay in stages tied to finished work. Some states limit deposits: in California, a home improvement down payment cannot be more than $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less (California Contractors State License Board).
How we calculated this
Cabinet, countertop, appliance and material prices from manufacturers, fabricators and national retailers (checked October 2026), installer hours times local wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), subcontractor and contractor margins from industry financial data, and regional price levels from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. We check the result against verified homeowner quotes. Verified quotes ran about 34% above our line-item model, so the estimate includes a +34% market adjustment (why we adjust).
