What homeowners actually paid

We checked this calculator against 78 window replacement quotes and invoices that homeowners shared publicly from 2020 to 2026, in 14 states. Older prices were adjusted to 2026 with official construction cost indexes. Their median was $11,400 for a mix of window counts, materials and brands, and 78% of them fell between our Low and High estimates for the same windows and state.

Published cost guides we checked put one window at about $975 (median of 6 guides from 2025-2026), 14% below our typical price. Guides are estimates too, often older or for a smaller scope of work; we follow the quotes homeowners actually shared, and 78% of them fell within our range.

What affects the cost

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace just one window?

A single standard vinyl window typically costs about $1,270 installed, including a share of the permit and haul-away. Per window, one-off jobs cost more than whole-house projects because the crew's trip and setup are spread over fewer windows.

Why do window quotes vary so much?

Mostly because of who sells and installs them. In our estimates, 10 vinyl windows typically cost $8,580 from a budget line, $11,330 from a local installer with standard windows and $18,370 with a premium brand. Compare itemized quotes for the same window size, glass and installation type.

Insert or full-frame replacement?

Insert windows are faster and cheaper because the existing frame stays. Full-frame replacement costs more (about $3,060 more for 10 vinyl windows in our estimates) but lets the installer fix rot and air leaks around the opening.

Is it cheaper to replace your own windows?

You can save the labor, about 11% of a typical price, but you take on the risk of leaks and may lose the installation warranty. In homes built before 1978, paid window work must follow the EPA lead-safe renovation rule (EPA RRP program).

Do I need a permit?

Many cities require a permit, especially for full-frame replacement. Our estimate includes a typical permit fee of $0 to $300 for the whole job.

How we calculated this

Window prices from manufacturers and national retailers (checked October 2026), installation hours from manufacturer guides times local glazier wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), contractor margins from industry financial data, and regional price levels from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Brand and company price levels come from verified homeowner quotes and Boston permit records. Verified quotes ran about 10% above our line-item model, so the estimate includes a +10% market adjustment (why we adjust). Full methodology · Sources.
